What is Floot Fire?

Floot Fire is a week long flute workshop dedicated to educating and inspiring young musicians. Floot Fire Houston combines an informal, comfortable, and supportive atmosphere with teaching, performance, and artistic standards of the highest caliber. Our flexible daily schedule includes: performance class, electives, chamber music, flute choir, recitals, and of course practice!

Students of all levels of proficiency are eligible to participate. Students should have played flute at least one year. There are three flexible levels of classes:

  • Allegro: for flutists who have played 1+ years
  • Vivace: for flutists entering grades 9-10
  • Presto: for flutists entering grade 11 and above

Floot Fire Houston will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in the museum district, across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts. map

Enrollment Options/Tuition

All students will participate in chamber music, flute choir, and electives. In addition:

Performer: $295

  • Play in performance class twice
  • Get 30 minute private lesson

Participant: $250

  • Audit performance classes
  • May add an optional 30 minute private lesson for an additional $25

Performance Class

In performance class performers will work on musical interpretation, tone, stage presence, relaxation techniques, and much more! Students must provide their own piano parts. Unaccompanied works are acceptable. Participant members will audit these classes only.

Electives

Two elective periods allow students to choose courses of study that interest them most. Please see class descriptions for more information.

Elective classes are open to all age levels unless otherwise indicated. Specialty instruments will be provided, some at an additional cost.

Beginner Piccolo (limit 8) Learn the first steps in playing the piccolo. This class is for students of any age with little or no piccolo experience.
Big Flutes (limit 8) Learn how to hold and play the alto and bass flute.
By Heart Develop techniques for learning a piece by heart. Students will bring in a piece they want to learn and will learn the 4 stages of memorization.
Ethno-flut-ology Learn about flute music and the types of flutes played throughout history. Students will learn about fife and drum, recorders, Irish flutes, Egyptian flutes, and more!
Movers and Shakers ($30 additional fee for book) Discover ways to alleviate pain, avoid injury, and improve technique through Body Mapping and Alexander Technique.
Playing in the Stratosphere (Middle School) Tired of squeaking and sputtering on high notes? Develop fluid, singing, easy high notes with this class.
Technique Madness (High School) Learn to play fast with great control and little effort. This class is all about discovering ways to improve on technique.

Recitals/Grand Finale Concert

Faculty recitals take place daily at 1:30. The Grand Finale concert featuring all Floot Fire participants takes place on Friday evening. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Registration

Deadline for regular registration is June 6, 2011 and tuition must be included. A $25 fee will be charged for late registration between June 6 and June 27. Tuition fees are 100% refundable until June 6; 50% refundable until June 13; and nonrefundable after June 13. Supply costs and late fees are nonrefundable.

Meals and Parking

Students must bring a sack lunch. Parking is free.
